Sandeman
In 1790, the Scottish George Sandeman (1765 - 1841) from Perth founded a wine-trading shop in London, with the help of his father, who gave him a loan of 300 pounds. This was the beginning of the today's world famous House Sandeman. George Sandeman had already decided to concentrate on the Port- and Sherry trade, when he started his business. Therefore, already in 1792, he represented the company 'James Duff', which was situated in Cádiz and shipped the 'Sandeman 1790', which made history as being the first vintage port. To get to know the regions, from where he got his wine, he often travelled to Spain and Portugal. In 1809, James Gordon, who was a partner in Sandeman's company, moved to Cádiz and started to ship Sherry under the name of Sandeman from there. The business was successful and Sandeman and his offices moved to St. Swithins Lane No 20 and the neighboured Sherbourne Lane No 13. These rooms remained the address of the Sandeman - Family and Sandeman main business address until 1969. After the death of George Sandeman, his nephew George Glas Sandeman (1792-1868) took over the company. He expanded the wine business, also offered insurance and exported British linen and cotton products. Those days the company even had its own wine-ship, the "Hoopoe", which was known for its speed. George Glas Sandeman gave the business to his oldest son Albert George (1833-1923), who asked his three brothers to become partners in 1868. In 1902, the company turned into a Ltd. The oldest son Walter Albert (1858-1937) has been chairman of the company since 1923. At that time, the famous "Don" - figure was introduced and it is still the symbol of Sandeman - products today. After the death of Walter Albert, his son Henry Gerard Walter Sandeman (1885-1953) run the business. After him it was his brother Patrick Walter, who was chairman of the board of directors until his death. Since 1952, Sandeman is a joint-stock company, the sons of Patrick Walter run the business after their fathers death. In 1963, Sandeman merged with the whisky producer Sandeman, situated in Edinburgh. Besides the same name, there was no other similarity or connection between the two Houses. Sandeman products available in Germany are: Ports Tawny, White, Partner's Ruby, partner's White and a Vintage, Sherries Medium Dry Amontillado, Seco Dry Fino, Cream Oloroso, dry Don, Amontillado, Fino Apitif Extra Dry, Armada Cream Oloroso, Royal Esmeralda Amontillado; furthermore: Madeira Medium Rich.

Scharlachberg
In 1898, the Cognac Distillery Scharlachberg Ltd was founded in Bingen. The company mainly produced brandy, which was gladly bought in Germany. Around the change of the century, the production was moved to the "Schmidtsche Neumuhle" (Smith's Newmill), which had belonged to the monastery 'Ruperberg' before. In 1900, a few subsidiary company offices started businesses in Silesian 'Grunberg' (Greenhill). In 1919, the company's name was changed into 'Wine Distillery Scharlachberg Ltd'. The change of the name was a result of the contract of Versailles, which protected the word 'Cognac' for France only. On 1st June 1920, the mark's name "Master spirit" (German: Meisterbrand), which is the main product of the House, was officially registered. Furthermore Scharlachberg turns into a joint-stock company, which is changed again to a limited partnership in 1937. The restart of the House after World War II went well: Scharlachberg quickly got back to its former reputation on the market. In 1958, the 'Scharlachberg Sale Ltd' was founded in Salzburg to offer products on the Austrian market as well. In 1960, the House Scharlachberg got the majority of the shares of the company J.G. Monnet & Co in Cognac sold through Jean Monnet itself. Scharlachberg is the only German spirituous liquors company with its own Cognac-House, which can only be found in the category of the best qualities world-wide. In 1962, the 'Steinhagian Distillery Hass KG' from Steinhagen joins the company merge. And in 1966, Scharlachberg takes over 50 % of the 'Boonekamp Ltd'. In 1971, the wine distillery joins the sparkling wine vinter's business of Scharlachberg. In 1979, it takes it over to 100 %. The already in 1920 registered product 'Scharlachberg Meisterbrand (Master spirit) Old Brandy' (38 %) gets its characteristically-full, winery bouquet from the careful distillation of chosen wines (preferred are the ones from the Charente) and the easy handable storage in more than 20,000 limousin-oak barrels . The barrels take 300 litres on average, where only the middle- "heart"-part of each distillation is stored (the usual storage time is two years). 'Altmeister' - Old Brandy (38 %) is distilled from especially chosen wines (like wines from the Grande and Petite Champagne). The eight year stored distillates are characterised by a full bouquet and balance. The "Master-Liqueur" by Scharlachberg is a mild - spicy Abbey-liqueur produced from wine distillates and selected herbs according to a handed down recipe (35 %). The strong 'Scharlachberg Jamaica Rum Blend' (40 %) has a much higher content of Original Rum than prescribed by law.
